Rev. Mark A. Lewis, S.J.
Mark Lewis was born in Miami, Florida on November 5, 1959. He obtained his B.A. in History and Philosophy from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama before entering the Society of Jesus at Grand Coteau, Louisiana on 14 August 1980. After completing his Philosophy studies (for the Masters of Arts and Licentiate) at St. Louis University in Missouri in 1984, he taught at Jesuit High School Tampa from 1984 to 1987. Sent to study Theology at Regis College, Toronto, Ontario in 1987, he received the licentiate (Masters) in that discipline in 1991. He completed doctoral studies in History at the University of Toronto in 1995, writing his thesis on “the social impact of the Jesuit College in Naples, 1552-1600.” He has taught at Regis College, Toronto; Loyola University, Chicago (Rome Center); the Pontifical Gregorian University, The Pontifical Institute Regina Mundi, both in Rome; John Carroll University, Cleveland; Rockhurst University; and Spring Hill College.
Ordained to the priesthood in Mobile, Alabama on June 8, 1991, he spent ten years in Rome, serving for six years (1998-2004) as the Director of the Jesuit Historical Institute coordinating the research of a team of Jesuit scholars in various fields of Jesuit History. He also served as Assistant to the President of Spring Hill College with special concern for Mission and Identity and chair of the Division of Social Sciences. He was the last Provincial Superior of the New Orleans Province
Jesuits from 2008 until July of 2014. After a brief assignment at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri where he directed the Catholic Studies program, he returned to Rome to teach at the Gregorian University in 2017. He was appointed Academic Vice Rector in 2019. During his three years tenure he organized the academic response to the COVID pandemic, and guided the process of quality evaluation of the university for its 5-year audit from AVEPRO (the Vatican agency for Pontifical Universities in Rome). After his appointment by the Holy Father, he became Rector of the Gregorian University on September 1, 2022.
