Chaplaincy

The Catholic Chaplaincy organises talks, seminars, meetings for worship and fellowship on a regular basis. This aims at encouraging thinking on matter of a social, theological and ethical nature. The chaplaincy can organise and/or provide counselling and advisory services for those who request it. 
 
The Church of Uganda community has a visiting Chaplain. Every Sunday, the Chaplain conducts a Sunday Service for the Church of Uganda members of the University.
 
WHAT DOES THE CHAPLAINCY AT UMU DO?
  • Provides spiritual guidance and a “listening ear” to all who need it.

  • Organises Catholic Worship i.e., Mass & other prayer opportunities for staff & students of the University!

  • Collaborates with Church of Uganda Minister(s) to provide pastoral services to Uganda Martyrs University Christian Union (UMUCU), especially on Sundays

  • Acts as a liaison between students &staff of the Islamic faith with the Imam of the area to provide the necessary pastoral care to the Moslems!

  • Enhances the spiritual growth of students &staff by organising events such as; Retreats, Recollections, Candle Light Services, etc!

  • Co-ordinates the activities of Religious Movements and Associations, e.g. Legion of Mary, Charismatic Renewal, Young Christian

  • Students, etc. which deepen the faith of students

  • Organises Outreach Programmes through Movements and Associations to contribute to the betterment of the lives of people in the surrounding Community!

  • Makes arrangements to instruct students & staff who are preparing to receive any of the Sacraments: Baptism, Penance, Holy Communion, Confirmation,…….!

PASTORAL COUNCIL

  • Meets monthly to plan for pastoral activities as shown on the Pastoral Program of the Semester

  • Acts as a link between the students’ Community and the Chaplaincy

  • Organises spiritual activities, e.g. Mass at Halls of Residence through Hall Representatives


COUNSELLING TEAM

  • Provides counselling to the bereaved, the depressed and those who are experiencing problems like; alcoholism, misuse of drugs, & relationships.

  • Members of the team include: the Chaplain, Bro Aloysius Byaruhanga, Sr. Lucy Akello, Mrs Laura Otaala


MOVEMENTS/ASSOCIATIONS & OUTREACH PROGRAMS

CHARISMATIC RENEWAL MOVEMENT

  • Meets for fellowships as indicated in program above

  • Carries out outreach program every Saturday

  • To join, see Mama/Papa Charismatic or attend one of the prayer sessions

GOOD SAMARITAN FAMILY

  • As the name suggests, the major aim of the Group is to act as Good Samaritans (Lk. 10/29-37) to the many underprivileged people in the surroundings of UMU, most especially the Orphanage at Kankobe

  • In addition to several other activities, the Group organises regular visits to the Orphanage, to socialise with the children, pray with them, and to contribute to their material & financial welfare

  • The activities of the Good Samaritans are co-ordinated by the Mama and Papa Good Samaritan in conjunction with the Chaplain

LEGION OF MARY MOVEMENT (LEGIONARIES)

  • The Major objective of the Movement is to promote the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus & the Church

  • Through their activities, Legionaries try to emulate the good qualities of Mother Mary who is: the comfort of the Afflicted, Refuge of sinners, health of the sick, and mirror of justice

  • Activities include: visiting the sick, in and outside the Community, Weekly Meetings on Monday at 5.30pm, and organising the

  • recitation of the rosary at the Grotto on Wednesdays at 5.00pm

  • To join, speak to the President/Legion of Mary or the Chaplain

 

COMMUNITY OF SANT’EGIDIO

  • Intercedes and takes care of the vulnerable people in the neighbourhood of UMU: These include – the young, the aged, the poor, the sick, orphaned and disabled

  • Members of this Community carry out visits to the neighbourhood to find out who are most affected and thus donate to them financially and materially

  • Besides financial and material donations, members pray and socialise with their hosts!

  • By joining SANT’EGIDIO Community, you seize an opportunity to serve the Lord through the needy – Mt. 25/40

YOUNG CHRISTIAN STUDENTS YCS

  • YCS is a school of life…. in which students learn to see, to judge and to act so that the student world can become a better and happier place to live in

  • As a student belonging to YCS Movement, one begins to develop a deeper Christian and social awareness of the problems facing students at school and society today

  • YCS helps members to acquire a solid and balanced personality so that they are capable of undertaking responsibilities at school and in society

  • YCS has basic teams & holds weekly meetings! To join, contact the section leader or the Chaplain

 

UGANDA MARTYRS UNIVERSITY CHURCH CHOIR (UMUCC)

  • UMUCC provides a wonderful opportunity to students who want to broaden their music horizons; as singers, drummers, & conductors, through lessons from a dedicated trainer

  • The rehearsals which last 90 minutes each, on Wednesdays and Sundays fit easily into the programmes of graduate and undergraduate academic schedules

  • There are opportunities for members of the choir to meet regularly outside rehearsals and have fun while getting to know each other

  • Come and join the choir to share your talent with the Community while praising God
