UMU Community Outreach Programme

The UMU Community Outreach Programme (UMU-COP) is a department of Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi whose mission is to make a contribution to development policy and practice through active involvement and action research.

The purpose of UMU-COP, therefore is to bear on the overall development of the surrounding community in an integrated manner that results from synergistic mode of operation. The rationale is that UMU has a wealth of knowledge concentrated at the hill of Nkozi. The surrounding community is struggling to improve their livelihood, which in most cases becomes difficult due to lack of technical information.

UMU-COP targets the rural population of Nkozi sub-country where 90% are subsistence farmers. The goal of UMU-COP is to improve the livelihood security of the rural population in Nkozi sub-county.

A glimpse to the community outreach programme

UMUCOP has mobilized the Nkozi community to form groups, first according to location and later by interest groups. Presently there are 41 groups with a total number of 606 members. These are based on a small-scale businesses and subsistence farming. Women form majority of the membership organized under one umbrella association known as Nkozi Agri Business Training Association.

Within the project framework, UMUCOP intends:
- To impart knowledge and skills for improved farming practices and Agri-business management.
- Improve farmers access to agricultural input (improved animal breeds and planning materials).
- Strengthen farmer access to markets and to develop farmers access to other services such as savings and credit, and agricultural research.)
UMUCOP, therefore, conducts training of farmers to improve their agricultural knowledge, setting up demonstration units for improved species of pigs, goats, bananas and other crop enterprises.
