About African Research and Documentation Centre (ARDC)

The African Research and Documentation Centre (ARDC) was set up to promote and facilitate the study of African cultures. Uganda Martyrs University recognises the importance of preserving, promoting and growing in one's culture, as part of the process of individual and community growth, which is essential for determining one's own identity.

In the African context, the process of cultural growth and passing on of values and information is largely influenced by oral traditions, and old people who are "experts" in this area, have a lot to contribute. The ARDC, therefore, would like to tap their experience and knowledge for scientific work.

The Centre also conducts and promotes research in African cultures in view of highlighting their significance in the present African context. To do this, the Centre relies on the cooperation of the people who are interested, or those who have already started doing some research, in African cultures.

The Centre constitutes a link with other institutions having similar objectives. For example, at the moment, the African Theological Today Series (ATTS) is hosted in the same building and office as the African Research and Documentation Center (ARDC). The purpose is to coordinate the different activities connected with the African Theology Today project.

As knowledge about other people grows, it is hoped that the Centre will contribute, in its own particular way, towards the building of respect for and acceptance of other people's cultures.

More specifically, the objectives of the Centre are:
- To collate and preserve materials and data about African cultures in their historical and contemporary forms using modern technology.
- To research and identify values found in African traditional practices, customs and rituals.
- To avail information, knowledge, technical assistance and facilities to those interested in carrying out research and investigation into the African reality.
- To use the knowledge and information acquired to promote sustainable human development which respects and takes into account the African reality and its physical environment, especially in the field of education.
- To give due credit to and utilise African resource persons' knowledge and experience about African cultures.
- To collaborate and liaise with individuals and institutions with similar objectives, as mentioned above.

The ARDC publishes a series of Monographs entitled: "Mtafiti Mwarika" (African Researcher) which can be found at:
