The African Theology Today Series (ATTS)

The African Theology Today Series (ATTS) is an initiative by Dr. Richard Rousseau, SI (Director of University of Scranton Press) and Dr. Emmanuel Katongole, Associate Research Professor, The Divinity School, Duke University, and Senior Lecturer, Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi. ATTS was conceived in May 2000 with the aim of promoting publications in the area of Christianity and African society.

Objectives:

Encourage publication on African theological topics
Particularly encourage young, or upcoming African scholars to undertake research and scholarship in theology and the general area of Christian studies.
Make available to a wider (Western) audience the work of African scholars, often published in journals or presses of limited circulation in Africa
Provide a major resource for African theological discussion within Africa.
Keep abreast with the developments and discussions within the general field of African Christianity

Activities:

1. Book Series: the goal is to publish a book annually on African Theology Today. The book can be an edited collection of essays of various scholars; or by a single author.

Vol. 1: African Theology Today, ed. Emmanuel Katongole was published 2002
Vol. 2: is under preparation and should come out by May 2004.
We are already collecting essays for vol. 3.

2. Book Competition: the goal is to organize an annual (or every two years) a book competition.

Scholars working in the general area of Christianity and society in Africa can submit their manuscripts
 The manuscripts are reviewed
The winning manuscripts receives a cash prize (currently US$1,000) and with the promise of their manuscript being published in the series by university of Scranton Press.

3.Distribution: the goal is to distribute as widely as possible the books published under 1 and 2 above.

University of Scranton press undertakes to distribution in the West
Distribution within African will be handled by either a local agent or by the office (African theology today)
The goal is to make available and affordable for African scholars and readers the books published under 1 and 2 above. Accordingly, we will ensure that books for the African market are discounted up to 50% of the U.S market price. We will also explore ways by which the University of Scranton press can work with a local printing/distribution company to print locally the books for distribution in Africa as this might reduce the cost of books considerably
