Editorial

At the dawn of the third millennium, the world is witnessing several distinctive trends. Among them are drastic developments in information technology application, universalization of the market economy and the multi-party system of government, and increasing disparity between the rich and the poor.

These developments are already having a drastic impact on nearly every society in Eastern Africa. In such a dynamic era, scholars become very crucial in supporting rapid development. An important and challenging task is to provide an effective forum for dissemination of information, and the exchange of views and experiences between researchers, academicians and policy makers. The Eastern Africa Journal of Humanities and Sciences (EAJHS) is devoted to this purpose. The main objectives of the journal are to:

1.  Provide scholars with a suitable academic forum for the dissemination of their research findings,

2.  Publish and report major advances and current trends in the theory and practice of humanities, social sciences and natural science,

3.  Act as a means for the dissemination of information, innovative projects, activities, and issues concerning humanities and sciences,

4.  Serve as a platform where scholars can enter into academic dialogue.

EAJHS is an international refereed journal devoted to theory development and empirical research in the humanities and sciences.

The journal will carry articles that deal with matters of importance to the church and society. EAJHS is published under the auspices of the Department of Research, CUEA.

Each issue of the journal will attempt to have five sections as follows:

1.  Scholarly Articles Section presenting critical essays and articles dealing with humanities and sciences.

2.  Research Reports section reporting original studies and research in humanities and sciences.

3.  Innovative Activities and Projects Section giving information on on-going project activities.

4.       Dissertation and Thesis Abstracts Section will describe concisely the design and results of Masters and Doctoral researches by CUEA students.

5.  Book Review Section

This maiden issue contains four scholarly, articles and two research reports.

As we launch this journal we would like to assure the stakeholders, researchers, article contributors and readers that we will provide quality service to them. This can only be achieved if contributors write and submit original provocative articles and research reports. Thus, the major criteria for choice of articles and research reports for publication will be originality, relevance of ideas to the African situation and contribution to understanding and solving the continent's problems.

As the journal's editorial board, we see the challenge before us as threefold: to launch a self-sustaining journal; to encourage African scholars and other Africanists to conduct research in their fields of specialization; and to act as a source of reliable information on Africa's problems and possible solutions.

We are confident that, with your support, we will meet these challenges. We are appealing to researchers and other scholars to take up the challenge and provide articles and research reports for publication. Finally, we will be happy to receive suggestions for the improvement of this journal.
