l'UNIVERSALITÉ DE LA PHILOSOPHIE. LA PHILOSOPHIE DE L'universel
« Les institutions philosophiques - Facultés, Départements et Chaires - des universités catholiques répondent à une triple mission : transmettre la mémoire des idées philosophiques produites depuis vingt-cinq siècles, éveiller à la pensée questionnante et méditante, conduire des programmes de recherche fondamentale jusqu'à leur publication.
Universitaires, elles réalisent leur tâche en honorant les exigences de scientificité et de probité ; d’appartenance catholique, elles s’attachent, dans l’autonomie de leur discipline, à faire fructifier la tradition intellectuelle chrétienne. Si certaines d’entre elles mettent davantage l’accent sur le travail critique et d’autres sur le témoignage de la conviction, toutes entendent faire place à l’inspiration croyante.
Selon les différents mondes culturels où ils exercent, les corps enseignants répondent diversement à l’appel d’un double « universel » : celui de la pensée native et celui de la catholicité. En Amérique Latine, la question de l’éducation s’impose prioritairement dans une culture en recherche de repères éthico-politiques. En Afrique, s’exprime tenacement un besoin d’articulation entre la « chose philosophique » et le socle de sagesse traditionnelle dans un contexte difficile où la santé et la survie des peuples sont en jeu. En Asie, carrefour multi-séculaire des grands mouvements de conquête et de commerce, les Départements de philosophie sont particulièrement sensibles aux dimensions interculturelles et interreligieuses. Les universités d’Amérique du Nord, parmi les plus prestigieuses d’entre elles, constituent des lieux de formation ouverts sur le monde entier en intégrant une double tradition philosophique : analytique et continentale, mais sont traversées par un puissant mouvement de sécularisation.

Mission
THE UNIVERSALITY OF PHILOSOPHY. THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE UNIVERSAL.
The task of the university institutions of philosophy - Faculties, Departments and Chairs – of the Catholic universities is immense: to transmit the memory of the philosophical ideas produced in the last twenty-five centuries, to sensitise to critical thought and meditation, to conduct fundamental research programmes up to their publication.
As university institutions, they carry out this task by meeting scientific criteria and criteria of integrity; being of Catholic obedience, they try, within the autonomy of their discipline, to make the Christian tradition bloom. If some lay emphasis on critical work and others on the witnessing of conviction, they all aim to leave room for religious inspiration.
In their everyday work, they respect one or other and sometimes the following five tasks: 1. training teachers of philosophy for secondary education; 2. the philosophical training of students in theology and seminarists who, according to the constitution Sapientia christiana, must follow a thorough training in philosophy ; 3. the training of teachers of philosophy for the seminary or religious Congregations; 4. the initiation of future academics to high level research; 5 and last, the demand for a specific track for students who are not students of philosophy but who expect philosophical references on specific issues or in the framework of a specialised course: education, law, political science, medicine, journalism, psychology…
According to the different cultural contexts in which they exercise their profession – Latin America, North America, Africa, Asia-Australasia, Europe – teachers bring different answers to the needs of a double “ universality ”: that of native thought and of Catholicism, giving priority to education, the articulation with traditional wisdoms, the concerns of the intercultural and the interreligious, the links between metaphysics and theology, between Anglo-Saxon and continental traditions, between Christianity and the secular. This is the main challenge for COMIUCAP : to make the poles of the philosophical exercise carried out in the five continents converse, in convergence with the great sapiential search for truth and in communion with the Church; and thus take part in the promotion of the intellectus fidei and the development of a new humanism.
