The university was born at the initiative of a group of young people who were looking for a different and innovative formation in the city of Pereira. In this way he initiated the previously called « Autonomous Popular Foundation of the Risaralda » in which the programs of Law and Industrial Economy were offered.
In 1973 this group of students asked the then Bishop Coadjutor of Pereira Monsignor Darío Castrillón Hoyos to be the rector of the institution and he accepted. Later, and giving it the new name of « Popular Catholic University of the Risaralda », it was decided that the direction of the institution should be in charge of the Diocese. On February 14, 1975, by Decree N °. 865 issued by the Diocese of Pereira, the university was officially created.
In the year 2011 it takes the current name: Catholic University of Pereira.
