Assumption was founded in 1904 by the Augustinians of the Assumption, a Catholic order under the Augustinian Rule dedicated to service through teaching and the hastening of the Kingdom of God, as reflected in their motto « Thy Kingdom Come. » The original campus was in the Greendale section of Worcester, on a tract of hillside land.

The most cherished project of Father Emmanuel d’Alzon, founder of the Assumptionist order, was the establishment of a Catholic university—Assumption College. Fr. d’Alzon envisioned an institution committed to the pursuit of truth and academic excellence through a dialogue between faith and reason. He sought to develop the whole person and wanted students to grow in the knowledge of their human condition.

The Augustinians of the Assumption, continue to guide Assumption College today. In collaboration with the trustees and the entire administrative, academic, and clerical staff, they have a primary role in guaranteeing the Catholic character of Assumption College and in promoting a philosophy of education that is consistent with the highest Christian and classical values and ideals.

Time has not dimmed Fr. d’Alzon’s message or mission: His commitment to the pursuit of truth and academic excellence is reflected through the College’s embrace of the Catholic Intellectual tradition; his devotion to compassion and charity is embodied by the College’s—and its students’—commitment to service. Today, Assumption proudly strives to emulate its mentor—and his motto: “Until Christ be formed in you.”
