The ASSOCIATION OF CATHOLIC UNIVERSITIES AND HIGHER INSTITUTES OF AFRICA AND MADAGSCAR (ACUHIAM)/ASSOCIATION DES UNIVERSIÉS ET INSTITUTS CAHOLIQUES D'AFRIQUE ET DE MADAGSCAR (ASUNICAM), as the name suggests, is the body that unites Catholic founded Universities and Higher Institutes, located on the Continent of Africa and Madagscar.

On this website, you will find, through the links on left, basic information about ACUHIAM/ASUNICAM as well all the member Institutions of ACUHIAM/ASUNICAM basically regarding their: history, location, objectives, academic departments and programmes, and contact addresses.

The initiative to found an ASSOCIATION OF CATHOLIC UNIVERSITIES AND HIGHER INSTITUTES OF AFRICA AND MADAGSCAR (ACUHIAM) goes back to the the first meeting of Catholic Institutes in Africa, which took place in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) from 2nd to 6th October 1989, with the help of the Missiological Institute, MISSIO-Aachen (Federal Republic of Germany).
The founding members are:

  • Les Facultès Catholiques de Kinshasa (F.C.K) 1987
  • L'institut Catholique de l'Afrique de l'Quest (I.C.A.O) (1968)
  • The Catholic University of West Africa (CUWA) 1981
  • The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) 1984
  • L'Institut Catholique de Yaounde (I.C.Y) 1991

In the service of the integral promotion of humankind and for the needs of the churches and societies of Africa, these institutes want to contribute to their development as qualified tools of evangelisation. It appeared to be useful and urgent to promote collaboration among these institutes, to organise common action to define their contribution to the general task of Higher Education in Africa and Madagscar. In this context the text of reference of the Association is "Ex Corde Ecclesiae" without forgetting "Sapientia Christiana" for the Ecclesiastical Faculties.
