The
Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA)
BRIEF
HISTORY
Founded in 1981 by the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Anglophone
West Africa (AECAWA), CIWA is a higher Ecclessiastical Institute
for the study of Theology and related disciplines within the socio-cultural
context of Africa. In 1984, the Institute was recognised by the Government
of the federal Republic of Nigeria as a religious educational institution
and affiliated to the Federal University of Calabar, Nigeria. in 1994,
the Institute was canonically chartered to award the Licentiate Degree
in Theology by the Congregation for Catholic Education, Vatican City.
Students, therefore, have the option to either enrol towards the ecclessiastical
degrees or the degrees awarded by the secular University of Calabar (essentially
all these are all degress in Theology). The main activities of the Institute
are teaching, research and the animation of the Life of the Church. For
the moment, it is the decision of AECAWA that the Institute remains a
Theology Faculty instead of evolving into a conventional University.
LOCATION
OF THE INSTITUTE
CIWA is located in Port Harcourt, a commercial city and centre
of the oil industry on the south-eastern coast of Nigeria. Port Harcourt
can reached very conveniently by air, road, and sea. With an international
airport, Port Harcourt has direct international flights and many local
flights from Lagos (just 50 mins) and other locations in Nigeria. It also
has a large sea port.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTE
- To study Theology and related disciplines in the soci-cultural
context of Africa allowing the Christian revelation and the Magisterium

- To train personnel for Seminaries, ecclesiastical

- To offer community service by being active in confronting
and solving the problems of society and cultures as an organ of the
Church in her complex task of evangelisation.
